modes4u team: Rilakkuma asks……. Jacqueline

Time to catch up with our team member introduction series. Today is all about our office administrator Jacqueline, who helps us staying organised in the office.

Hello, who are you by the way?
My name is Jacqueline. I was born and raised in Hong Kong. For my last year of High School I moved to Australia and also went to university there. I studied Social Sciences, majoring in Japanese, Management and Sociology. This combination really enabled me to work in different fields. Since I came back to Hong Kong I have been working for example as a student counselor or in administrative positions like in a passport department.

What is your job at modes4u?
I am the office administrator and make sure everything runs smoothly here. I take care of new deliveries, buy office supplies, stamps and more. I spend a lot of time in the warehouse and work closely with our packing staff, as I am also in charge of unboxing new products. But I also support our Managing Director Sandra in many administrative tasks, do research, organise things and spend lots of time on the phone.

What is your favourite product or your favourite category at modes4u?
I love our owl fabrics. I don’t really sew myself; still I like to look at all the different fabrics. They look really cute and there are so many different styles of owl designs.

What do you like most about your job at modes4u?
It’s great to have so much cultural exchange here. It is my first time to work with people from Germany and Austria which I find very exciting, as every nationality has its different characteristics. I also enjoy trying different foods that my colleagues bring along and learn about their culture.

You’re surrounded by creative stuff the whole day. Do you like to craft or to be creative in your leisure time?
I do not craft very much, but like to be creative in other ways. Music is one of my passions; I am very active in my church band and love to sing.

Huge San-X delivery blocking our office

Fortunately we were prepared, so it didn’t hit us by surprise. We received a gigantic San-X delivery containing 2 tons of stationery delivered on 10 pallets and packed in more than 200 boxes. A day before the delivery we took some time to clear as much space as possible. We were really worried that we might not be able to fit everything in here, but it worked out fine. But now our office area is really blocked, our office ladies are sitting right next to big piles of boxes. What a funny sight!

You can already look forward to items from the Rilakkuma Wonderland edition, hundreds of new San-X stationery items and lovely new Decole products.

Cute Rilakkuma office bathroom

We would have never guessed that one day we would show you the modes4u office toilet. Why should we? Usually office toilets are boring and really not worth being the centre of attention. But at modes4u it’s not just a regular office toilet anymore: We now have a Rilakkuma bathroom! Both our ladies toilets are now embellished with the cutest Rilakkuma plush toilet paper holders. One is in white bear design, the other one depicts the brown bear. When washing our hands we now get the soap from the most adorable Rilakkuma soap dispenser which we also sell in our shop. And to stick signs on the doors we use adorable Rilakkuma deco tape. The modes4u office toilet is now very kawaii.

Birthday Buns for Ho

Birthday time at modes4u. A couple of days ago we celebrated the birthday of our team member Ho by having a nice Dim Sum lunch in a new restaurant. It was a whole new experience for everyone, as this restaurant didn’t use the traditional bamboo steaming baskets to make the food but colourful silicone steaming baskets. None of us have ever seen that before, it looked really nice. The food was delicious too and as a nice surprise Ho got special birthday buns, which are filled with lotus paste and have a red mark on the outside.

But a birthday isn’t a birthday without a proper cake, so later in the office we all shared a nice creamy birthday cake. What a yummy day. Happy Birthday Ho!

The first modes4u wedding

Summertime is wedding time all around the world – also at modes4u. Our team member Maggie just got married and invited the whole team to join the wedding ceremony. The bride and groom picked a lovely little church in Hong Kong for the wedding, which looked very much like an ancient European church with stucco on the ceilings and colourful mosaic windows. That it was not that old was revealed by the fact that there were integrated monitors in those parts where you couldn’t see the altar very well and got a video feed of what is happening. A very convenient feature.

The church was packed with friends and family of the couple who enjoyed the fairy tale like wedding. Of course the bride looked stunning in her beautiful wedding dress as did the groom in his tuxedo. The ceremony was held in Cantonese and was very touching – even for our team members who didn’t understand the language. As wedding photos are very important in Hong Kong there were many photographers and of course all the guests also took lots of pictures.

It was a really beautiful wedding and we enjoyed it very much. Congratulations to Maggie & Kenneth from the whole team!

Rilakkuma strolls through the warehouse

In the last we have been adding hundreds of new San-X products to our shop. Just as we were finished we caught our big office Rilakkuma strolling through our warehouse. Of course he is always super curious what all his new products look like, so he took a close look at all the new stuff we have. Fortunately we were fast enough to take a picture before Rilakkuma became lazy again and decided to take a nap.

Baby on Board with Rilakkuma

Our former customer service fairy Gabi left the modes4u team a couple of weeks ago to become a mum. This week she visited us the first time with her adorable son, who is just four weeks old. Everybody in the office fell in love with the baby at once, even the guys wanted to hold him in their arms.

Of course we couldn’t let the opportunity pass to take a picture with little Jamiro and our big office Rilakkuma. We just put the baby on his comfortable furry belly and the little boy was sleeping happily. What a great baby bed!! Congratulations Gabi, you and little Jamiro are always welcome to take a nap on the big Rilakkuma.

modes4u team: Rilakkuma asks……. Veronica

Time to meet another packing fairy from the modes4u team. Maybe Veronica has even packed your order?

Hello, who are you by the way?
I’m Veronica, I am 22 years old and was born and raised in Hong Kong. Part of my family is from India which is why I still have many relatives over there and visit them regularly. So I grew up in a very international atmosphere with lots of visits to other countries and languages. At home I mainly speak English, but of course I can also speak Cantonese and a bit of Hindi as well.

Before I started working here I was working in the catering sector, for example in Disneyland and different restaurants in Hong Kong.

What is your job at modes4u?
I am part of the packing team, so I’m involved in the daily duties revolving around shipping the incoming orders: picking products, wrapping and packing, cutting fabrics, sticking stamps and taking the packages to the post office.
It is a very active position; you walk around a lot and are working with your hands rather than sitting the whole day at a desk.

What is your favourite product or your favourite category at modes4u?
I really like the folders we sell in our shop. They are just so colourful and have fun designs. Also they come in so many sizes and versions. Especially the folders with several pockets are super cool, I can totally see them being super useful at school or the office.

What do you like most about your job at modes4u?
It is such a happy environment here that it almost feels like home. I feel super comfortable around my workmates, as everybody is really nice.

Also I enjoy the “relaxed work”. Of course there is a lot to do and it gets super stressful around Christmas, on Mondays and after holidays as orders just build up then, but still there is a calm atmosphere to it. Everybody works hard but the tasks are clear. When working in a restaurant there often is a lot of noise, hectic and pressure in an uncomfortable way.

You’re surrounded by creative stuff the whole day. Do you like to craft or to be creative in your leisure time?
I love to craft for friends, like making cards or designing photo albums or scrapbooks. If a birthday or special occasion is coming up I work with stationery then. But I don’t really craft for myself.

The biggest San-X delivery ever!

This is certainly our biggest San-X delivery ever. Today 5 pallets filled with more than 90 boxes arrived. They are filled with lots of new stationery and really maaaany plush toys. So finally we could restock lots of products that were sold out, but of course there are tons of new items too.

And some spectacular news: To celebrate Rilakkumas 10th Anniversary San-X released a series of zodiac signs plushies. We are allowed to sell them as one of the very few online shops outside of Japan, it’s such an honor. The whole collection arrived with the huge delivery, we will hurry to upload them to our shop.

modes4u team: Rilakkuma asks……. Sandra

This will be a long interview, but she just has so much to tell. Why? Because she started the company many years ago. Meet the boss: Sandra!

Hello, who are you by the way?
I’m Sandra, 31 years old. I am the Managing Director and founder of modes4u. My hometown is Bregenz in Austria, but I have been living in Hong Kong for more than eight years now. After I finished my Masters degree in Computer Science I was invited to join a summer university program in Hong Kong and Beijing. I liked it so much that I decided to stay. I moved to Hong Kong and studied Business Management.  During that time I met my husband Alan and after graduating we started modes4u.com together.

What is your job at modes4u?
At the beginning I did everything from A to Z as there was only Alan and I. I looked for suppliers, ordered products, wrote product descriptions, packed and shipped orders, blogged, organised partnerships, answered customer emails etc. Meanwhile my tasks have changed, because now I have a great team that supports me a lot.

I am still responsible for purchasing, so I order products, look for new suppliers and do everything that is connected to that. I also visit trade shows all around the world several times a year to check out the newest products and trends and to meet business partners.

I frequently start new projects, as I have so many ideas for improving and simplifying the shop. Despite that I am still pretty active in the day-to-day business: I answer lots of emails every day and do paper work and administrative tasks. But when we have lots of orders I still help packing.

What is your favourite product or your favourite category at modes4u?
I like everything we have, otherwise I would not have ordered it. But personally I like our fabrics the most. I have done quite a bit of sewing with our echino fabrics, but I also like to use cute designs with matryoshkas, owls, deer etc.
Washi Tapes are on second position in my personal priority list. We have a very big variety now and I really like the beautiful prints.

What do you like most about your job at modes4u?
I am in the very special situation that I have founded this company, therefore I have to say: everything! It is a very special feeling for me to see the shop grow each year and get more and more professional opportunities.
Also I like the work attitude in Hong Kong. Everybody is working eagerly and without complaining. Our team is really great and I appreciate that a lot.

I feel like you can try lots of new projects here. In Europe many things would not be possible that easily and without a lot of bureaucracy. There is an innovative atmosphere, the people are not afraid of experimenting and also willing to take a risk.

You’re surrounded by creative stuff the whole day. Do you like to craft or to be creative in your leisure time?
I like to craft very much if I have a good occasion. Like when I sewed curtains with our echino fabrics for our whole house, because we needed some. It took super long until I was done, but even though it was lots of work, I totally enjoyed it.

For my little nieces I sewed bibs with our fabrics, as a mother can never have enough of those. And I also like to use fabrics as decoration, e.g. by just framing them.
I have also used Washi Tape to decorate vases and glasses or used them as name tags for glasses at parties and BBQs.
