Fireworks on Handover Day in Hong Kong

It was a weekend full of events again. Last Sunday was a special public holiday in Hong Kong, because 15 years ago on July 1st Hong Kong was officially given back to China after being a British colony since 1842. This handover day is celebrated with huge fireworks all across Victoria Harbour. It lasted for about half an hour and was really colourful and impressive. The fireworks were shot from the rooftops of the big skyscrapers on the harbour front, but also from numerous ships floating in the harbour.

Earlier during the day there was also a huge rally with several hundred thousand participants, as this day is also used for political protest.

On Monday, which was a holiday in Hong Kong too, Victoria harbour became the venue of the International Dragon Boat Carnival. Teams from all over the world participated in exciting races through the harbour right in front of Hong Kong’s impressive skyline.
