New laminate fabric series: PUL laminates by Michael Miller

We have a new kind of laminate fabric in our shop. While the laminates we carried so far were regular cotton fabrics that had a laminate coat on top, the PUL Polyurethane Laminate series by Michael Miller works differently. It is a super soft 100% Polyester knit fabric, that is backed with a Polyurethane laminate. So the laminate is not on top, but at the bottom. This makes it the perfect material for diapers, picnic blankets, raincoats, waterproof bags, bibs and so on.

You can wash the fabric in high temperatures, it’s waterproof, resists wrinkling and is perfect for heavy long-term use. Michael Miller released some sewing tips and care instructions with it, which we want to pass on to you:

Sewing tips:
1. Use a walking foot or Teflon foot for sewing ease
2. To sew two layers of PUL without a walking/Teflon foot, use a strip of wax paper over the top and tear away when done
3. Pin inside the seam allowance to prevent holes that allow water to seep through (Tip: Can also use clips or glue sticks instead of pins)
4. Washing and drying in high heat will also seal up holes
5. Use All-Purpose Polyester threads. (Tip: Avoid cotton or cotton blend threads – they cause moisture to wick through)
6. 9/65 or 11/75 ballpoint needle recommended for best results.
7. If sewing many layers, switch to 16/100 ballpoint or denim needle.
