New: Japanese 3D Paper Craft Sets

A new fun thing in our shop. We received adorable 3D Paper Craft Sets from Japan. They provide you with material to craft kawaii 3D greeting cards, paper wreaths or decorations. To create the 3D effect you need to use a paper embossing ball tool which is not included in the sets.

The sets have super kawaii fairy tale designs and we got quite a few Christmas sets too. They contain lots of templates that you can cut out, emboss and stick on the cards. The printed outlines tell you exactly on what position you need to place the cut-outs, so it’s really easy to do. All the instructions are in Japanese only, but you can easily follow the instructions. We also found a couple of Japanese videos which might help you. Unfortunately we can’t embed them into this post, so visit here to see how to use the embossing ball tool and how to make the 3D paper craft book sets. Also check out our little “how to” collage at the end that we made from photos from the manufacturer to explain the different steps of the DIY sets.

Christmas crafts: Christmas Phone Case

Another super easy Christmas DIY idea: style your phone case for Christmas. We just used a normal phone case and decorated it with some stripes of Washi Tape – our favourite crafting material. The tape might come off on the edges after a while when using the phone, but therefore you can easily remove the tape to get your original phone case back or to redecorate with other tapes.

Another super easy idea what to use our Washi Tapes for: make colourful jars filled with spices. One of our team members wanted to create a pretty looking new spice rack and just got some small jars, filled them up with spices and decorated the lids with colourful Masking Tapes. It looks really pretty and also helps to find the right spices faster, as every jar looks different.

Welcome to Japan Hobby Show Part 1

Part of our team went to Tokyo a couple of weeks ago to visit the Japan Hobby Show. It was a really great exhibition with lots to see and try. As the trade show was open to the public the whole time, there were lots of opportunities to actually use different hobby products like fabrics, clay, colours, different techniques etc. We took hundreds of pictures which we want to show to you guys. So today we’re kicking off our little series with some general impressions from the show.

DIY Mother’s Day Craft with Washi Tape

We have a super cute, fast and cheap idea for a very personal Mother’s Day gift: Make a wall decoration with your own silhouette for your mother. It’s a great variation from giving framed pictures of yourself and just takes a few minutes to make. All you need are a couple of Washi Tapes, a side-face picture of yourself, a pair of scissors, a pen and some baking paper. This is how we did it:

1. Stick your picture with some tape on a window, stick your baking paper over it and sketch the outline of your head with a marker or pen.

2. Use different Masking Tapes to stick over the sketch on the sheet of baking paper. Make sure the tape stripes always overlap the outline and always stick it a bit onto the previous stripe, so that all the stripes are well connected (otherwise you’ll have trouble taking your silhouette off the baking paper later).

3. Turn the baking paper sheet around and cut out the silhouette.

4. Carefully remove the Washi Tape silhouette from the baking paper. Be sure you start removing the paper on the first stripe you stuck.

5. Stick the silhouette onto the wall.

Of course you can modify this technique in any way you want. For example you could make two silhouettes (your mother and yourself facing each other) or you could put your silhouette on a card or frame it. We really like the idea of sticking it directly on the wall and surprising your mother with it. You can easily remove the picture to another spot, it will come off very easily without a trace.

Fabric lovers: Laminate yourself

This is a pretty cool thing. We get so many requests from customers who ask for a laminated version of their favourite fabric. Now you can just do it yourself. When part of our team went to Japan the last time, they discovered an iron-on laminate foil and were really impressed by the results and the quality. So now you can buy this laminate foil in our shop and just iron it on all of your favourite fabrics. We carry two different sizes, each one either with a very smooth or a little rough surface. This is a really cool DIY-thing if you want to make waterproof things like bags, bibs, aprons, table cloths, wash bags etc.

How to use:

1. Place the foil with the smooth side on the fabric to be laminated

2. slowly iron the paper side with medium heat without steam at 120-140 degrees Celcius. Apply a little pressure

3. Allow material to cool down completely

4. Slowly peel off the paper (If the foil doesn’t stick completely to the fabric, just put the paper back on and repeat ironing)

For everybody who prefers to buy laminated fabrics already, check out our laminate category in our shop. We got some of our popular Robert Kaufman designs in a laminated version recently.
