modes4u team: Rilakkuma asks……. Maggie

Without her you might not even know about us. Get to know our online marketing expert Maggie in our team introduction series.

Hello, who are you by the way?
I’m Maggie, 28 years old, and live with my two lovely cats in Hong Kong. I grew up in this city and really love it, but I also wanted to see more of the world. So I went to Europe for a year, worked quite a while in Ireland and traveled through many countries.

Before I started to work for modes4u I was employed by an online marketing agency in Hong Kong. My experience and skills really help me a lot in my job now, where I can apply them on a whole new level.

What is your job at modes4u?
I am responsible for the internet marketing in our company, so basically it is my job to make sure everybody knows about modes4u. My job is never finished, because we constantly come up with more ideas how we can make our shop known on the internet. I promote our kawaii products by advertising online and organizing giveaways and cooperations with different channels. Also I am in charge of our Affiliate Program and of course keep an eye on what’s happening on the web and where modes4u should be present.

What is your favourite product or your favourite category at modes4u?
From all the cute characters in our shop I love Kutusita Nyanko cat the most. I also bring my Kutusita Nyanko wallet every day that I bought in our shop.

Despite of all the cute characters we have, I have to say that our fabrics here impressed me the most. They are really pretty, colourful and very high quality, especially when you compare them to the ones you can get on the local fabric markets in Hong Kong. I even joined a sewing class, because I was so often thinking about what I could make with those fabrics.

What do you like most about your job at modes4u?
I enjoy the international atmosphere here very much, there are colleagues from different countries and the intercultural exchange is really exciting. Everybody loves to share his/her own culture, for example colleagues always bring food from their trips or cook typical dishes to share with everyone. It’s also very funny to find out cultural differences in taste, language or activities. This helps us to get to know the Hong Kong culture better too.

Also modes4u is honestly the best online shop that I have ever seen when it comes to the products, organization and customer service.

You’re surrounded by creative stuff the whole day. Do you like to craft or to be creative in your leisure time?

I like to learn new things and am interested in many different creative directions. For a while I was doing some felting, where I created cute mini felt objects. Then I took a sewing class to learn how to sew.
I also love eating and cooking, so I took classes where I learned how to make macaroons or egg tarts.

modes4u team: Rilakkuma asks……. Alan

Today we’re introducing a member of our staff which has been there from the very first minute: Alan is one of the bosses at modes4u.

Hello, who are you by the way?
I’m Alan. I’m 34 years old and come from Hong Kong. I am married to Sandra, the Managing Director from modes4u.com. Together with her I build modes4u more than 4 years ago. Before I joined the company fulltime I was working as an IT specialist for different companies here in Hong Kong.

What is your job at modes4u?
I am the IT manager and responsible for everything technical at the office. I developed our packing software, our shop software and website, so I have to watch out that everything is working fine. I am constantly trying to improve everything of course, to make it easier, more user-friendly and faster. It is a never-ending story, but I enjoy it a lot.

As one of the bosses I am also busy with lots of organizational stuff, negotiations, business trips and so on. And sometimes I even am the craftsman at the office, when I have to fix or build things.

What is your favourite product or your favourite category at modes4u?
I know all our products in our shop very well, because until we hired a fulltime photographer last year, it was also my job to take all the product pictures. I like all of them, because they are so beautiful, but if I had to choose a favourite category, it would definitely be our dessert erasers. They are from Japan and made by the company Iwako. And even though Japanese products are usually very high-quality, those are the best looking erasers I ever seen; they look so real and so delicious!

What do you like most about your job at modes4u?
I have been in this shop since it started with a couple of orders a week and just two staff members, so it is very overwhelming to see how our business has developed and grown. I feel very fortunate that we have such a good team as I think the most important asset for a company is the staff. Everyone at modes4u is very passionate, hardworking and happy with his/her work. Our working environment is quite harmonized and a lot of times it just feels like a group of friends are doing something great together.

Personally, I really enjoy seeing how our products are making people happy.  It might sound cheesy, but since I graduated from school I often wondered what I can do to make the world a better place. But then I see all the feedback we get from happy customers and realize that these kawaii things bring happiness to our customers. That’s a wonderful feeling and a great motivation to find new products and improve our shop constantly.

You’re surrounded by creative stuff the whole day. Do you like to craft or to be creative in your leisure time?
I like to be creative not so much in the crafty way, but in the field of technology. I love technical stuff and computers and can be very creative in dealing with them. A lot of times I also HAD to come up with ideas, because when we started to build our online shop a couple of years ago, the technology was nowhere near as good as today. I had to build most of our software from scratch, which involves a lot of creativity.

modes4u team: Rilakkuma asks……. Lok

It’s time to introduce another one of our staff members to you in our new blog series. This month you’ll get to know Lok – one of our packing staff – a bit better.

Hello, who are you by the way?

I’m Lok. I’m 24 years old and was born in Hong Kong. I love everything yellow and adore food, so Hong Kong is the right place for me, as there are hundreds of restaurants with different kind of food. Before I started working at modes4u I was working in the jewelry industry. Although I’m still pretty young, I am the “oldest” employee at modes4u, because I started working here in 2010.

What is your job at modes4u?
Together with my colleague Karen I am responsible for everything that is connected to sending the packages: I pick the products for the different orders from our warehouse, pack them and prepare the postal formalities. I also cut the fabrics from the big bolts for all the fabric orders that we get every day. And of course I go to the post office every evening with all the packages to mail them all over the world. So my job is very active, I am up on my feet and moving all day long.

What is your favourite product or your favourite category at modes4u?
Yellow is my favourite colour, so I like all the yellow products in our shop. The yellow Kiiroitori chick from the Rilakkuma family is really cute.
And since we got quite a few clay books which show pictures of clay craftings, I am also quite interested in this. Until now I have just crafted some little clay items, but the pictures are really inspiring and I love to look at them.

What do you like most about your job at modes4u?
We are a really cool team. Everybody helps each other and is really nice. The atmosphere in the team is great, everybody is working hard, but still we laugh a lot and have fun at the office. Plus the products are so lovely. I really enjoy picking them, and sometimes I’m really surprised when I pick new products that I haven’t seen before.

You’re surrounded by creative stuff the whole day. Do you like to craft or to be creative in your leisure time?
I really love to craft and to try all kinds of different styles. In Hong Kong you can get most crafting accessories super cheap so that’s a great opportunity to experiment and find out what you like. I sometimes craft jewelry like earrings and also like to sew little accessories and pouches. But my latest obsession is leather crafting. I have visited a class where I learned how to work with that material and already made all kinds of things.

modes4u team: Rilakkuma asks……Gabi

As our team is constantly growing, because we just have so much to do, we thought it’s about time that you get to know us better. And our office mascot Rilakkuma is just the perfect candidate to ask a couple of questions. But who has to go first? As luck would have it, a new team member just started a couple of weeks ago. What a perfect opportunity to introduce Gabi a bit more detailed. Here we go.

Hello, who are you by the way?

I’m Gabi, I’m 30 years old and come from Glarus in Switzerland. That’s quite a small city with just 5,000 inhabitants. At least it is compared to the 7-million-city Hong Kong, where I have been living for almost three months now. In Glarus I worked in the textile and tourism sector, but later I moved to Zurich to live in a bigger city. There I worked in the media business as a key account manager.

What is your job at modes4u?

I’m in charge of customer support at modes4u. That means I answer all the questions coming in via email, our blogs or Facebook. And that’s really a whole lot every day. So of course I am sitting in front of the computer a lot, change orders, correct delivery addresses and answer questions concerning our shop and products. But you can also find me a lot in our warehouse, where I have to measure things, take a close look at products or discuss questions with our boss Sandra or the colleagues.

What is your favourite product or your favourite category at modes4u?

I love our fabrics with all those beautiful patterns and designs. But the clay products look very appealing as well. I haven’t tried them yet, but many sets look really interesting. I can imagine that crafting with them is lots of fun.

What do you like most about your job at modes4u?

I enjoy the customer contact via email, because our customers just love the products from our shop so much. So do I. Therefore I like being in contact to the customers and find a solution for the different requests. Plus I really feel comfortable in our team and look forward to being with my lovely colleagues and great bosses every day.
I already noticed a little difference to working in Switzerland. Although I have been really lucky so far and always enjoyed working in my former jobs, the day-to-day work life over there was a bit tenser as at modes4u.

You’re surrounded by creative stuff the whole day. Do you like to craft or to be creative in your leisure time?

What I enjoy the most is wrapping gifts – just because I love giving gifts. To wrap things in pretty paper, fabrics or ribbons is as much fun for me as the unwrapping is for the presentee. And here I’m definitely in the right spot to pursue this hobby. Until now I never used colourful deco tapes for wrapping for example, but when I see all those colours and patterns, I definitely get a lot of ideas how I could use them.

In addition to that, I also like to decorate and to creative in the kitchen.

Tons of new San-X stuff

We have the cutest new stuff from San-X in our store. In our latest delivery from Japan we really got a wonderful mixture of items. So check out our new products on our website. Some things we want to mention here more detailed, because they are especially cute.

Like the adorable squeezable Mamegoma seal charms for cellphones or bagpacks. We got them in different colours, they are super soft and filled with polystyrene balls, so you can squeeze the hell out of them. Basically these cute little balls are even good for your health, they train your hand muscles, are good for stress relief and make you smile.

Now we also carry items from the latest Rilakkuma Happy Holiday Picnic collection, for example this big Rilakkuma plush toy. The cute summer hat and the funny shoes are typical for the collection. The look is so gorgeous, don’t you think?

If you like cats, you’ll be happy to hear that we got a couple of new Kutusita Nyanko items as well. We absolutely adore the funny screen cleaner cat paws. You can put them on your finger and clean the display of your mobile phone, the screen of your laptop or TV.

Brand new and incredibly adorable: The Rilakkuma Bento accessories. There are a couple of cute sauce or spice containers, just take a look at those wonderful little bottles with bear caps.

And just to let you know, we will still be adding more products in the next couple of days, especially stationery such as memeo pads, pens and stickers.

San-X visits us in the office

Most of our business partners are located in Japan or the US, so it is always very special when they come to our office in Hong Kong during their business trips. This week Shigeo from San-X visited us. We have known him for many years already, but of course we don’t see him a lot in person, so it was nice to meet him again. It was the first time he saw our current office and was very impressed how big it is. Of course he also enjoyed seeing how many San-X products we stock and took a lot of pictures of our warehouse. The next time we visit Japan, Shigeo wants to show us the San-X warehouse. That would be totally awesome and a dream come true for us.

And as we thought it should be kind of mandatory for a San-X employee to take a picture with Rilakkuma we photographed Shigeo, Sandra and Alan with our huge office mascot.

Cute Rilakkuma Forest plush charms at 7-Eleven stores in Hong Kong

Awww, this is just adorable. The convenience store 7-Eleven in Hong Kong just started a new Rilakkuma promotion this week. Now the whole city is covered with gigantic Rilakkuma stickers and posters on all their shops. During the 7-Eleven x Rilakkuma Forest Collection campaign customers can get seven super cute plush charms with suckers by collecting stamps. For every purchase worth 20 HKD you receive one. Once you’ve collected 15 stamps you get a charm for free. If you can’t wait just add 12 HKD when you have 5 stamps and get one too. Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma and Kiiroitori have super kawaii forest designs, which all you Rilakkuma fans know already. There are toadstools, capes and squirrels involved. The charms look totally adorable and are pretty big. Which one do you like best? Unfortunately we couldn’t touch them yet to test their softness, as the 7-Eleven stores just display them in glass boxes. But we’re pretty sure they’re super soft and extremely squeezable.

Furry, soft and cute: new Rilakkuma and Kutusita Nyanko stuff

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but what a furry one! We started adding all the new San-X products from our last delivery to our shop and already purr in excitement. There will be so many things to come, but for the beginning we concentrated on the cutest plushies, wallets and cellphone accessories by Kutusita Nyanko and the Rilakkuma family. That means adorable cat paws, big bears and dressed up chicks. They all have one thing in common: They are SOFT. Really soft. We could spend the whole day just rubbing the different items against our cheeks. And when you see the big Rilakkuma plushie in that yellow sleeping bag, you just want to squeeze yourself into that sleeping bag too to cuddle all day long…. But don’t do it, it won’t work.

It doesn’t get much furrier than that, folks, so check out out latest San-X stuff.

Our favourite product of the week: Plush toys

So soft, so cute, so squeezable. We got quite a few new plush toys this week in our huge San-X delivery. We didn’t even find the time to add them all to our shop yet, but still they are our favourite product of the week. It was just so much fun to open the boxes filled with fluffy cuteness. We will be adding new plush toy from Rilakkuma, Korrilakuma, Kiiroitori, Kutusita Nyanko and more any day, so check our New products site to stay on top of things.

What’s new about the plushies? A lot of them are really big, like 30 centimeters and more. Until now we mainly ordered smaller ones that you can also use as charms for your bagpacks or phones. But we thought maybe you’d also like big squeezable plush toys, so we got a couple of different models. Time to start the hugging.

Our gigantic plush Rilakkuma arrived

This is a dream come true!! Today we got the largest San-X delivery in the history of our shop and it contained a truly precious and truly huge item: an enormous Rilakkuma plush toy. We have been waiting for the super kawaii bear since last August already when San-X released it and we immediately ordered one. Everybody gathered around the big box to solemly unpack it and was incredibly impressed with the size of Rilakkuma that came out. We had a great time taking pictures with the adorable animal, he is the star of our office. The 165cm tall plushie will be our office mascot from now on and you will hear and read a lot of it, we promise. We know that a lot of you guys will want a huge Rilakkuma like this, but unfortunately we can’t sell them.

Now we will focus on adding all the new San-X stationery items to our shop, so you can buy a lot of new kawaii stuff. If your favourite item has been sold out lately, check our website again, as we will also restock many popular products. But for the moment, enjoy the pictures of the day or watch the YouTube video we took with cute Rilakkuma.
