In this blog post, we wanted to share with you a really great tutorial on how to make a surgical style face mask with 3 layers and pleats. Developed by the super talented Shan of ShannieMakes, these masks are easy to make and don’t require too much fabric to create. Plus these masks are beginner friendly so you don’t need to be a sewing pro to make them!
Here we’re linking to the awesome free sewing patterns she has provided to make these masks in sizes for adults and teenagers, children (ages 7 – 12) and small children (ages 3 and up). Shan has even made a paper pattern for an envelope for you to keep your mask in.
Don’t worry if you’re new to sewing or to sewing patterns, Shan provides two excellent sewing tutorials on her YouTube channel (we’ve included both videos here for your reference). In both videos Shan walks you through how to make the masks from start to finish. In the extended video she includes a little more information on pattern placement and a few extra details, especially useful if you’re new to sewing. If you’re looking for different designs of masks, such as duckbill, she includes patterns for those too so make sure to check out her site. Her tutorials are detailed and provide suggestions on material types to use for which layers. Her post is super detailed!
Below her video tutorials and images, we have included some double gauze fabric suggestions to help you get started if you wish to make your own, plus some elastics.
We must emphasize that these masks are not replacements for medical surgical masks. It won’t protect from virus, only some dust particles. These masks are not intended for babies or toddlers.
Take care everyone!!
