Among the recent stunning Timeless Treasures fabrics that arrived in our shop, there were some examples of impressive textile artwork by one of our favorite designers for the brand, Chong-a Hwang. Her exquisite designs never fail to enchant us with their sophisticated beauty, refined taste, delicate lines, clever composition and powerful use of color. She greatly favors flowers and other nature elements in her patterns, and makes wonderful use of golden embellishments throughout many of her designs, some of which feature traditional Asian motifs. We do love her work!
Here we wanted to share with you a free sewing pattern that uses one of her latest hydrangea panel fabrics. As you will see in the attached image, the design features a complex combination of flowery fabric squares that look like framed windows, seemingly joined by smaller rotated squares made out of two markedly different triangles. Thus are defined the light blue star shapes forming the background. Single triangles connect the outer blocks to the quilt binding, in a continuation of the main design. You can choose any fabric you like for the backing of the quilt. We have a few recommendations here for you!
All in all, this is a visually complex quilt made out of fabric squares, paralellograms and triangles, that will require some sewing experience for a polished result. The finished project measures nearly 98.5cm x 98.5cm, therefore it could also work as wall hanging. Just make sure to send us a picture of your quilt if you decide to give it a go, as we would love to see and share it!
Hydrangeas are native to southern and eastern Asia, but became very popular as ornamental shrubs and presently are pretty widespread along temperate climate areas. Their blue, lilac and light violet flowers, like those portrayed in the quilt, are great favorites, but they can also be white or go along beautiful shades of light to medium blush pink, and through to dark purple! Did you know that hydrangea flowers can change color depending on soil acidity? Well, now you do! 🙂
