modeS4u’s own Sandra recently created a super cute new item that we really wanted to show off here! Choosing a lovely children’s Robert Kaufman fabric with a superhero design, she made a fabulous present, a “Schultüte”, for her son, Mason. As you will see in the photo included below, it is a huge cone-shaped container, and Mason looks very glad to have it in his hands! Are you wondering why? Well, the handmade cone is beautiful of course, but let’s get to know more about the Schultüte.
In German culture, children are given a Schultüte for their first day at primary school to ‘sweeten’ their start. These are usually filled with candy and stationery. Mason’s Schultüte also included socks and T-shirts. The Schultüte is undoubtedly a big hit with children!
Did you know about this charming tradition from countries like Austria and Germany? It is really a smart idea, easily turning kawaii stationery supplies and some other useful school items like clothes or bento boxes into a great present! You just need to add a few small gifts or sweets inside, and a gorgeous wrapping on the outside. This is easily done, too: you may use some poster paper or light cardboard glued into a cone shape, then decorate the outside with fabric as Sandra did, and further wrap the inside bundle with colored tissue paper.
Have you ever made a Schultüte? Let us know!

Mason looks very happy with his Schultüte!

We love welcoming new kawaii San-X characters, so here comes our presentation and tribute post for the brand new San-X panda bear, Hamipa! As soon as we saw Hamipa’s design, we realized he was a somewhat peculiar panda bear. Below, you will find some descriptive images by San-X that tell us how Hamipa developed, check them out!
It all started with a normal panda bear, and we know pandas are relaxed, right? Well, it seems Hamipa is especially easy-going, relaxed and lazy, even for a panda! So, after too much relaxing, and taking things too easy, the big black patch on his fur slid down his belly until it became something like loose short pants… that are just too big for him, and keep sliding down!
Hamipa is not bothered by this, he really does not care, and would rather be free of pants of any kind. In addition, he often takes advantage of such loose garment, carrying things tucked into his pants, such as an apple… or even his good friend, the owl Pichihiko! Pichihiko usually pulls up Hamipa’s pants when the bear is fast asleep, but as soon as he leaves, Hamipa turns around and they slip down again!
In our kawaii shop we already have a lot of cute Japanese stationery featuring Hamipa, so we invite you to come and see them. In the meantime, take a look at the images below, we hope you like them!

Those of you who follow us closely will have noticed that there is a new San-X character roving around the Japanese stationery section of our kawaii shop: a cute light brown raccoon named Kokoro Araiguma (where Araiguma means raccoon in Japanese). And it was about time we introduced her to you!
Kokoro Araiguma is a very special raccoon, because she has a super power! And a really beautiful and inspiring one it is: she can heal hearts when they are sad or broken! In addition, her power has a potency or effectiveness of 120%, so heart healing is guaranteed 🙂 The funniest thing of all is that Kokoro Araiguma manages to heal broken hearts by washing them! Thus, her basin, soap bubbles and clothesline are common elements of the illustrations where this cute character appears. Check them all out in this San-X video!
Of course, Sensei Heart-chan appears in this story, too! He is a sensitive and kind heart that benefits like no other from the super healing power of Kokoro Araiguma, and there is also a somewhat grumpy Japanese raccoon, named Ashi Araiguma. Possibly due to his bad temper, Ashi Araiguma only has 30% healing power … and sometimes ends up being equally washed and hung out to dry, perhaps in an attempt by Kokoro to improve his mood.
We love the idea of this super healing power! The aching heart changes color and gets covered in a hard layer that’s easily cracked… until the special washing power of Kokoro Araiguma restores it to his usual looks and character! We welcome all these characters to our kawaii world!
