One of our lovely team members flexed her creative writing muscles and whipped up a fun short story about everyone’s favorite lazy bear, Rilakkuma! Enjoy the story below!
Rilakkuma and Friends
Rilakkuma was lazily lying under the warm Japanese sun. He was enjoying another afternoon in the garden doing nothing. But in the back of his mind, he knew that his lazy time alone was going to be ruined.
Right on queue, a large red water balloon engulfed him in water. Soft giggling could be heard in from a nearby tree.
A cute, white bear cub climbed down the large trunk of the tree. Her name was Korilakkuma. She was the source of the giggling.
“Got you!” she hysterically laughed.
A small, plump yellow bird came flapping out of the house.
“What is this disgrace!” he shouted, crazily flapping his wings. His name was Kiiroitori. He was a very grumpy and nosy bird, always getting into others’ business. He looked at Rilakkuma – drenched. His head slowly turned towards Korilakkuma. Korilakkuma’s smile was immediately wiped off her face.
“Explain,” Kiiroitori said in a cold voice.
“It was just a joke,” said Korilakkuma, crossing her arms and sticking out her tongue.
“Did you just stick your tongue at me, young lady?!” Kiiroitori asked in rage, his chubby yellow face turning bright red.
“Kiiroitori, just leave her alone,” Rilakkuma said in a lazy voice.
“Oh, why don’t you come here and help her out, then, Lazy Pants” Kiiroitori said in a challenging tone.
“First, give me a dumpling,” Rilakkuma plainly said, a plan forming in his head.
Kiiroitori rolled his eyes and flapped towards the basket near Rilakkuma’s lounging chair. But just as the little yellow bird was reaching for a dumpling, Rilakkuma grabbed him.
“What do you think you’re do-” Kiiroitori began, but he didn’t finish sentence. Rilakkuma had begun to tickle him.
Kiiroitori began to chuckle… Then giggle… And then burst out laughing.
“This’ll cheer him up,” Rilakkuma smiled.
“HA-HA-HA!!!” Kiiroitori laughed out loud. “STOOOP!!!” he laughed happily, tears forming in his eyes.
Rilakkuma stopped.
Kiiroitori was still giggling. “Thanks Rilakkuma!” he began happily. “That really cheered me up!”
“Gosh. I didn’t know Kiiroitori could actually smile,” Korilakkuma said, a mischievous smirk forming on the corners of her mouth.
Kiiroitori and Rilakkuma glared at Korilakkuma.
Rilakkuma mouthed Don’t, and shook his head.
Korilakkuma simply shrugged innocently.
Did you know that Rilakkuma turned 15 this fall? In order to celebrate his birthday, 7-Eleven stores in Hong Kong are offering a promotion during October, with some very cute items featuring this most kawaii of toy bears and his friends Korilakkuma, Kiiroitori and Kogumachan!
Check out some images of the Rilakkuma products available for redemption, which include mini bags in four different designs, one for each San-X character of the series. They are made of silicone, which is both soft and sturdy, and look really cool: you can wear them on your wrist or carry them in a bag.
Other amazing items included in the promotion are big Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma plush toys, where our favourite lazy bear and his mischievous friend lay on their tummies, a honey jar and picnic bag within easy reach!
Are you new to Rilakkuma? Welcome to one of the most popular characters in Japan! San-X‘s Aki Kondo created this ever-chilled-out toy bear in 2003, while hoping for a more relaxing life. It quickly became a hit, and the “Relax bear” has since appeared in picture books, games, cartoons etc. Have you ever felt the need to slow down, too?
Your favorite San-X critters, Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma and Kiiroitori, have a new friend and his name is Kogumachan. The word Kogumachan itself means Little Bear and the story behind this cute new friend is that when Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma were in the Honey Forest, they came across Kogumachan. Kogumachan and Korilakkuma especially struck up a fun friendship, however the two do seem to squabble a little bit when with Rilakkuma! This little guy sports brown fur with a white tuft and is certainly as cute as his new friends. What do you think of this new little guy? Check out our plushies and other cute items of him, Rilakkuma and co!

As you might know we are an official San-X retailer and currently stock nearly 1,000 products from the Japanese company. But even though most of our customers know the cute Rilakkuma bear, the Sentimental Circus animals or the little Mamomega seals, you might not know the story behind them. This is why we start a new mini series on our blog today. In the next weeks we will introduce 4 of the most popular San-X characters more detailed, tell you about their characteristics, relationships and friends.
And today we start with probably the most well-known member of the San-X family: Rilakkuma bear and friends.
Rilakkuma
When translated literally from Japanese into English, Rilakkuma means ‘Relax bear’ or ‘bear in a relaxed mood’. So the name already tells you the most important thing about the little bear. He loves to lay around, is never in distress or a hassle and just enjoys his life. This is why you always see him lounging on pillows, meadows, chairs, relaxing in cafes and so on. Rilakkuma totally loves food, so you’ll see him eat a lot. Some of his favourite dishes are pancakes, omelettes, dumplings and puddings. He also enjoys listening to music or watching TV.
Rilakkuma has a mysterious zipper on his back and you see a white cloth with blue polka dots when you open it, still nobody knows what’s inside Rilakkuma. Rilakkuma is most of the time surrounded by his friends Korilakkuma bear and Kiiroitori chick.
Korilakkuma
The little white bear Korilakkuma is a friend of Rilakkuma, but sometimes also a little troublemaker. He is a cheeky little fella who likes to make a joke and sometimes also enjoys annoying his friends. He emulates Rilakkuma a lot and also likes musik and sleeping. He is quite adorable when asleep.
Kiiroitori
The little yellow bird Kiiroitori is a tidy chick that likes to clean. As Rilakkuma is lazy and messy, Kiiroitori often scolds him, but ends up cleaning up his mess after him. Korilakkuma is also often mischievous towards the little bird, so Kiiroitori sometimes has a hard time with the two bears. Still they are best friends and love each other. Kiiroitori likes to save, he saves little treats or treasures that he gets or finds.
