We didn’t have any Canvas fabrics by this manufacturer so far, but now you can get a wonderful series of Robert Kaufman canvas fabrics in our shop. The collection is called ‘Auntie’s Attic Canvas’ and contains lots of retro flower prints. They all look like wallpapers from the 70’s. The heavy canvas fabrics are very robust and therefore great for home decor projects.
2014
Burton has been working in our warehouse for a while now, we just never got around to introducing him properly. So let’s get to know him better.

Hello, who are you by the way?
Hi, my name is Burton. I am 27 years old and come from Hong Kong. I did not always live here though; I spent 8 years of my live in England. I started to go to school there in year 9 and stayed until I finished university with a degree in interior design. Before I worked at modes4u I was employed by the Hong Kong government in an administrative position in the lands department.
What is your job at modes4u?
I am part of the packing staff in the warehouse, so I pick products, wrap and pack orders, cut fabrics, stick stamps and take the packages to the post office. The warehouse team is growing constantly, but we try to keep a concept of rotation, so that you work in a different position every week and really stay in touch with all tasks there are.
What is your favourite product or your favourite category at modes4u?
I think the Sumikkogurashi characters are cool. I like the story behind them and the fact that they are designed in a very simple, minimalistic way. Usually the kawaii things in our shop have very loud and bright colors, so the products with these characters stand out. They are really likeable.
What do you like most about your job at modes4u?
It’s great to work with the people here; we are a young team and get along very well. Everybody has a different background. Some employees are from other countries, but also all Hong Kongers are from very different jobs and fields. It’s very interesting to share experiences and learn from each other.
You’re surrounded by creative stuff the whole day. Do you like to craft or to be creative in your leisure time?
It’s definitely not part of my everyday life, but if there is a special occasion or a special person I can be very creative, craft things myself or organise surprises.

A lot of Rilakkuma and a little bit of Burton
Spring is here… at least on our computer desktops. We found some super cute spring wallpapers that will bring sunshine to your screens. You can download them for free by clicking on the pictures below. They all show lovely outdoor designs with flowers, cherry blossoms or strawberries.
The owl fabrics from the “What a Hoot” collection by Exclusively Quilters are the most popular fabrics in our shop; they were ordered more than 5,000 times already. Now we also have this series as cuddly flannel fabrics. Check out the super soft What a Hoot flannel fabrics.
Easter is Kiiroitori’s big time to shine. The cute yellow chick is usually a little in the shadow of his bear friend Rilakkuma. But chicks are a popular Easter symbol and we have lots of Kiiroitori stationery items in our Easter category which would make a perfect little Easter gift.

We teamed up with the sewing blog Straight Grain from Belgium for an awesome project. We provided An with some of our organic canvas fabrics by birch and she sewed an amazing baby and toddler bean bag with them. As Canvas is quite robust and thicker than regular cotton, it is quite suitable for heavy-duty items.
The best thing: You can find the tutorial and free patterns on the blog Straight Grain.

The cute Sumikkogurashi characters are one of the youngest members of the San-X family, but they are already super popular. Time to introduce some of the characters a bit more detailed.
Literally Sumikkogurashi means ‘Corner Living’. All the cute little characters are super shy which is why they like to hide in the corner where they feel safe. They can be seen as a reflection of Japanese society, as many Japanese people can be very shy, so being in the corner of a place makes them feel more comfortable, because they get a feeling of security.
The Sumikkogurashi family consists of many different characters. They all have their own personalities with different reasons why they like to hide in corners.
Shirokuma
The shy white bear hates the cold. But he lived in the north, so he decided to run away from his chilly home. He used the cloth Furoshiki to tie up his belongings when he ran away. He is afraid of strangers and only feels comfortable when he can have a cup of hot tea in the corner.
Penguin?
The green penguin is so cute, but he seems to have lots of issues with his identity. He even puts a question mark behind his name and used to wear a plate on his head that made him look like a ‘Kappa’ (water spirits from Japanese folklore). He really has no confidence and questions himself.
Neko
The beige cat is super shy and really loves to hide in the corner. It’s just the best place for her to sharpen her claws by scratching the corners or sofas.
Tonkatsu
The kawaii pork cutlet Tonkatsu is very greasy and oily. He actually consists of 99% fat, which is why he is left behind on the plate. His pink nose is 1% meat. He loves to hide behind the soy sauce bottle on the table.
Tapioca
The cute colorful Tapioca are the bubbles from the popular Taiwanese bubble tea drink. They are left behind when the tea is finished, because most people don’t eat all the bubbles. There are always a couple of bubbles together as several ones are left over.
Zassou
The cute green seaweed is left behind as decoration on the plate. He is very cheerful and has a positive attitude. His dream is to be part of a pretty flower bouquet made by a florist.
Hokori
The happy little grey dust ball is super light and sometimes flies through the air. But he can be found in the corner or under the sofa as well.
Furoshiki
The pink wrapping cloth Furoshiki was used by polar bear Shirokuma when he ran away from the north. He is a are a type of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth.
In the current issue of the big German sewing magazine burda style we are featured in two different categories. Our Kokka windows fabric was named fabric of the month and sold out within 24 hours after the magazine was published. But our fabrics were also used in an adorable series about spring rain clothes, for example for sewing some cute children’s shorts with our organic birch polka dot fabric.
