We would like to warmly welcome a new type of fabric that just arrived in our online shop:  say hello to soft shell fabrics!  From now on, and just in time to get ready for autumn and winter, you will find this kind of revolutionary textile material in our fabrics category.  Our soft shell fabric, from Quality Textiles, is water resistant on one side, with a really soft material on the other.  Therefore, it is very popular for sewing active wear and jackets for outdoor use, as it helps you keep dry and warm in cold damp weather.

Water resistance does have different degrees, though, and soft shell fabrics are not completely waterproof.  They combine a certain degree of impermeability with another vital quality of these fabrics intended for high output activities and sports: breathability.  This is the ability to absorb and release perspiration, which our bodies generate during physical activity.  Our soft shell fabrics will protect you from light wind, while keeping you comfortable due to their being very breathable.

Soft shells are mainly used for outerwear, especially garments apt for mountaineering and snow sports, trekking, etc.  However, they will no doubt be useful whenever you are active outdoors in a cold humid climate, to keep you or the kids comfortably warm and dry.  Covers for tablets, laptops, and glasses are good creative projects where soft shell may be used.  If you are especially interested in keeping your soft shell sewing project as water resistant as possible, remember to use polyester thread for the seams!
