This soon in the year, there are some spots around the world’s Northern Hemisphere where spring is already showing its first signs, mostly in the form of early buds and blossoms, but also of greater insect and bird activity. Many of these changes in nature are strikingly beautiful, and lovely traditions revolve around them.
In Japan, the blossoming of the sakura flower (also known as cherry blossoms) usually starts past mid-March, and marks the celebration of hanami or “flower viewing”. People gather in parks and other locations where sakura are abound, to admire the trees in bloom, often while enjoying a drink or a bento picnic. It is a gorgeous sight that attracts millions of people, even from distant countries. The Japan National Tourism Organization website shows a sakura blossom blooming forecast each year to make hanami easier. These flowers are absolutely beautiful and super popular, you’ll find their designs on reusable bags, flower fabrics, kawaii stickers etc.
We know the early blooming of almond trees, which usually happens in February, is celebrated with festivals along the Mediterranean and neighbouring European countries, California and some Australian locations. Is there any similar tradition of spring blossom viewing wherever you live? Let us know!
