Here we go with a new free sewing pattern for all of you, our brave quilting beginners! This sweet project of a Baby Milestone Quilt is a wonderful gift for those who are soon expecting a baby, or a little one who happens to be a bundle of joy! It uses a beautiful fabric by Robert Kaufman from the collection Oh How They Grow, clearly intended for just this purpose of making a great visual record of a baby’s development. You just have to place your child onto the quilt, and use colored rings, baby toys, childcare items etc. to mark the intended number and type of milestone you want to record (day, week or month).
In the images included below, you can see the full panel, a close-up picture, and an adorable photo of the finished quilt, with baby included! This is just too sweet for words, isn’t it? Fortunately, images can speak for us when words are not enough, something that may often happen when a newborn, a young baby or a toddler is around, and the new parents are just overwhelmed with joy and love for their child…and also because of a lack of sleep! This, together with the incredible but real fact that baby growth seems to move faster than the speed of light, means that taking a lot of milestone pictures is a very good idea. Otherwise, as the famous film quote goes, there is great risk that “all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain”!
The finished quilt measures about 101 x 86cm, a comfortable size both for its intended purpose, and to easily put it away. Besides, you can hang it as wall decor on your child’s room while not in use. It may also come in handy to keep track of a creative project, or countdown to an important event, and you can use any fabric of your choice for the backing. We’ve included some cute solid color fabric suggestions here, for your perusal! We hope you send us pictures of the finished project, if you decide to give it a go! Good luck!
