There seems to be no end to kawaii installations these days, to the utmost delight of the people of Hong Kong! Today we are sharing with you some beautiful images found on the hkppltravel Facebook page, as they feature our favorite corner creatures: the Sumikkogurashi!
These adorable funny San-X characters jumped to the Japanese big screens in December, and their first film “The Unexpected Picture Book and the Secret Child” was a total success locally. Now the Sumikkogurashi are celebrating the upcoming Year of the Rat with a wonderful display and several promos at The One, a popular mall in Hong Kong. (Hkppltravel even posted a video of this, to the great joy of us Sumikkogurashi fans!)
The period of celebration around the Lunar New Year brings a festival of humongous proportions to China, involving a migratory movement of travelers. Clearly, no one wants to stay behind regarding auspicious gestures and traditions, so propitiatory decorations pop up everywhere on streets, homes and workplaces, mixing modern popular culture with millenary heritage elements like fireworks, lion dances and spring icons…Check out the photos, and you will find some of these on the installation, where the dear shy animals dress up as rodents, a daruma or even a dancing lion!
For those of you yet unfamiliar with the individual stories of the Sumikkogurashi, we encourage you to check the brief informative texts made available by San-X, where you will learn many interesting and odd details about each corner creature: bear, cat, penguin, lizard, cutlet, tapioca, shrimp etc. And if you want great Sumikkogurashi items for yourself or as gifts, do check out our online kawaii shop selection!
